After winning his eighth gold medal of the Beijing Games, Michael Phelps climbed into the photographers’ pit to get to his mom and sisters for a true moment.
I didn’t want to get caught in the pack, so I went around to the back of the group and held my camera as high as I could. This is my favorite Michael Phelps picture of these Games.

I think Phelps’ mom has become like “America’s Mom” — she’s been joyful and graceful at the same time.
she’s been fantastic. i loved watching her during the races . . . and during that last one, i think she near collapsed. i mean, her own flesh and blood, out there, being the most celebrated human body in the world. it’s gotta be a crazy rollercoaster of emotions.
